Album release not too far away!
This is a tune I called "A simple polka" or "En enkel polka". This piece is one of many tunes you will hear on a new album I am working on. Enjoy!

HABITUS | TØSSE | ATLANTIC OCEAN ROAD (FULL CONCERT)
Просмотров 6943 года назад
In the year 2020 we saw a pandemy which had large implications for many of our lives. As most other musicians, I lost all live shows, but I decided to create a solo album. This ended up quite well, and I wanted to have a rather extra-ordinary concert for the release of the album. This concert was held at the Atlantic Ocean Road, which is one of the most visited Norwegian tourist attractions, on...

I’ve listened to this 50 times y’all are so awesome
This is so fucken cool 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽 HAIDE!
How do you count notes? For me it is really tricky.
@Martin-lm9lp Great question, Martin! I'm used to a lot of different meters to begin with, but one thing that always happen when I encounter a rhythm or meter that I'm unfamiliar with is to start looking for patterns, both melodic, harmonic and rhythmic patterns. There are a lot of melodic phrases that are common in this music, kind of like cadences, and these can be used as guidelines to where the (down)beats are. I'm also looking for rhythmical patterns, and most, if not all, rhythmical music is grouped as 2, 3 or a combination of these. The clue here is to get used to certain combinations, like we know something is a calypso if the subdivision is 3,3,3,3,2,2. The pattern in this particular tune is 2,2,2,3,2,2, which can also be referred to as 13(/16, /8 or whatever). I would suggest you divide this into two patterns, as it is very long. You can think of it as one bar being 3/4 (2+2+2) plus 7/8 (3+2+2). Hope this explains. The magic starts to happen when other groupings are played (inprovised) OVER the original groove though, but that's way more advanced. I can give one example for 13, which could be 3,3,3,2,2, giving you a simple 3:4 polyrhythm for the first half of the bar as an extra little spice.
@trekkspill1234 Thank you very much for encouragement and such a great and helpful advice. I have never played balkan music on accordion but I was always interested. There's not much on the internet unless you speak a little south slavic language. I will try and do my best. I wish you all the best! M
@Martin-lm9lp Feel free to reach out if you need help with something! There's at least one book that's relevant in English, "Bulgarian harmony" by Kalin Kirilov. I've written more about ornaments and rhythm in my master's, but that's in Norwegian..

БРАВО!
Момци, супер сте!
Very impressive! I wanted to ask you how did you start studying this music ?
I've been doing six years of higher education within this type of music, but I did play a lot before that as well. I've learned by playing with people, taking some lessons with other musicians and listening to a lot of recordings. I was first introduced to the Balkan music by my uncle, Raymond Gjelsten, who also became interested in Balkan music early, and by my first music teacher, Veroljub Penjin, who's originally from Serbia but has lived in Norway since the 1970's. I've always been obsessed with "different" things, so this music was very strange and obscure to me when I first heard it, and that made me curious. Cheers Nikos!
@@trekkspill1234 Thank you very much for your answer! I am trying as well to learn but i find it a really challenging especially for its technique. You have a very nice sound and i am amazed by your playing. Bravo!
@@nikosfoutakis4264 Thanks, glad you like it! Good luck on your practicing, because that's the only thing that helps :)
